Finasteride (Proscar)

Finasteride is used to treat male pattern baldness and enlarged prostate. It may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Finasteride works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to DHT (dihydrotestosterone) in the body. DHT is responsible for causing hair loss and prostate enlargement. Finasteride reduces the levels of DHT and thus slows down hair loss and enlargement. It also slows down the progression of prostate enlargement.

You should not use Finasteride if you have high or low blood pressure, heart problems, or if you are taking medications that cause DHT (e.g., alpha-blockers, diuretics).

How should I take Finasteride?

Take Finasteride exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not crush or chew the tablet.
